Last Friday, one of my favorite NFL coaches of all-time passed away. Former Minnesota Vikings/Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green reportedly died of a heart attack at the age of 67 and it’s about time we celebrated the man’s life here at The Ultimate Sports Blog.
How so exactly?
How about ranking my top 10 favorite biggest coaching meltdowns of all-time?
Even though Green was an excellent coach (especially in Minnesota where he coached for 10 years and had NINE winning seasons!), he’s likely best remembered for his huge meltdown when he was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and his team lost to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football….but we’ll get to that later.
Rest in Peace Denny Green. This one’s for you…..
10. Mark Dantonio Doesn’t Have Time For Stupid Questions
Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio was not happy with questions about his team’s performance following a VICTORY over Eastern Michigan. NEXT QUESTION.
9. Woody Hayes Hates Interceptions
8. Paul Rhoads Hates Bad Officiating
Following a loss to the University of Texas in a close game, Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads goes off on the officials. The Cyclones ended up losing a game to Texas 31-30 but should have had the chance to win. They ended up recovering a Texas fumble late in the game that was eventually overturned through replay and ruled a “non-fumble” in an absolute horrible call. Sometimes a coach has a right to be pissed. This is one of those times.
7. Mike Singletary Wants Winners!
Mike Singletary was in a bad place when he was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He took the job even though the 49ers were a dreadful team. They just fired head coach Mike Nolan after starting the season 2-5 and they needed a kick in the ass to get things going. Singletary was exactly that. In his first game as coach of the 49ers, Singletary made waves by sending one of the 49ers best players (tight end Vernon Davis) back to the locker room after he wasn’t happy with his play on-the-field. This led to this amazing press conference and the 49ers finising the season on a 5-4 run.
Angry Mike Ditka is the best kind of Mike Ditka.
5. YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!
Just in case anyone needed a reminder as to why players play the game of football in the first place, former Jets head coach Herm Edwards reminded us back in 2002….
4. I’M A MAN!
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy is not a fan of the press attacking his players. If you want to attack anyone….attack him. HE’S A MAN! HE’S FORTY! HE CAN HANDLE IT! COLLEGE KIDS ARE PUSSIES!!!!
3. We Got Our Ass Kicked
TOLD YOU! This is one of my personal favorite all-time coach meltdowns for one reason and one reason only. Mora’s facial expression when he hears the word “playoffs” is pure gold.
1. THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!!!
The reason I wrote this article and why we are here in the first place. Dennis Green was a fantastic head coach, but he will likely best be remembered for losing his mind following a loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. Rest in peace Denny Green. You are who we thought you were. A damn good football coach.
